The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
