This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
