Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
